Prologue

Vivienne Forbes has always been the rock for everyone around her. She’s loved fiercely, to the point where the ones she cared for the most have hurt her the deepest. Yet, her love has never wavered. There’s always been a void within her—a yearning for the love of a father, a simple acknowledgment, a shred of empathy. Just once, she wanted to be seen, to be understood. But all she ever got was silence.

The love she holds for her family is something unexplainable. She would kill for them, and in the same breath, she would die for them. It’s the kind of love that drives you to madness, to sacrifice, to everything.

Yet, her history with love wasn’t filled with light or joy—it was a storm, a series of heartbreaks that never quite healed. The pain of losing someone you love is a wound that never truly closes, especially when you can never tell them just how deeply you cared. You live in regret, in an endless loop of what-ifs and missed opportunities, until it consumes you, until you run from it all. She learned this lesson all too well in her teens.

As a result, she built walls around her heart, pushing away anyone who dared to get too close. After all, the greatest betrayal comes from the ones you love the most—the ones you let in, the ones you trust.

But then, he walks into her life.

Niklaus Mikaelson is a man who takes what he wants, no questions asked. He’s driven by vengeance, and his path is one of destruction. Klaus stops at nothing to achieve his goals, removing anyone who stands in his way. Every action he takes has a reason, though those reasons are often selfish—and tied to his greatest fear: being abandoned.

He’s known for his art, often seen sketching when the world becomes too overwhelming. But where his talent is seen, his emotions remain locked away. Klaus doesn’t show love. He uses fear as a weapon, ensuring loyalty through intimidation, because in his mind, no one would ever choose to stand by his side willingly. He forces them to.

What the world calls evil, Klaus believes is just an appropriate response to the cruelty and unfairness of life. He is ruthless, manipulative, narcissistic—and yet, there’s a side to him few ever see. Compassionate. Vulnerable. Emotional. But those sides are buried beneath the years of betrayal and pain that have sculpted him into the monster he’s become.

“Love is a vampire’s greatest weakness. We do not feel, and we do not care.”

But what happens when this philosophy is put to the test?

What happens when their worlds collide? When he finds the one person who can challenge everything he’s ever believed? Will he push her away, or will she be the one to finally break down the walls he’s spent centuries building?

Will she let him in? Can she forgive the past, even when it’s more haunted than she could ever imagine? And when she rises—when she becomes more than she ever thought she could be—will he be there for her?

In the end, neither of them know it yet, but their souls are intertwined. She is the one who stands by his side when no one else has. The one who promises to love him, even in a world where love is nothing more than a weakness.

Is she his salvation, or his ultimate demise?
